John Barclay will continue as captain of Scotland on their three match summer tour as new head coach Gregor Townsend opted for continuity in his first squad.

The Scarlets flanker captained his country for the last three games of the RBS 6 Nations after Greig Laidlaw was injured and he will continue in the role with the Gloucester captain having been called into the British and Irish Lions squad at the weekend.

There are few surprises in Townsend’s first squad of 34, for the test matches against Italy in Singapore (June 10), Australia in Sydney (June 17) and Fiji in Suva (June 24).

The uncapped players are Glasgow tight head D’Arcy Rae, Warriors centre Nick Grigg and Edinburgh’s hooker George Turner, who has started just one game for the capital side.

Peter Horne, WP Nel and Ruaridh Jackson (named as a full-back) are among the recalls from players who missed the Six Nations.

“This tour is all about learning and competing,” said Townsend. “As a coaching group will be learning ourselves about our players and how they perform in different environments against three sides with contrasting styles of play.

“We’re going to have three weeks preparation before we head overseas which will enable us to implement the key components of how we will play.”
