The Great British Bake Off is officially back! That means we’ll all be suffering weekly cravings for freshly baked cakes, biscuits and bread as we watch the latest group of bakers battle their way to the final.

Luckily, you don’t have to be blessed with baking skills to rival Paul Hollywood to satisfy your cravings.

Dundee and its surrounding area is home to several great cake and coffee shops offering fresh, handmade and delicious goodies.

Here are some of the best to check out over the next few months…

Redberry, Dundee and Broughty Ferry

Redberry’s award winning dessert parlours in Dundee and Broughty Ferry (which is newly opened) carry a range of cakes and cheesecakes, as well as waffles, crepes, churros, ice creams and milkshakes.

Cakes are homemade freshly and daily by hand, using locally sourced ingredients. They currently offer two flavours of cheesecakes at a time, which change every couple of days.

Freshly made Belgian waffles can be customised with your preferred choice of toppings and the recently introduced churros are delicious, especially when smothered with Nutella Sauce!

Redberry will soon be widening their range of cakes to include a variety of sponge cakes, chocolate cakes and school-like desserts.

Treat yourself – ask the friendly staff for their recommendations to ensure you have the best RedBerry experience! It’s open Monday to Friday 1pm to 11pm, and Saturday and Sunday 12 noon to 11pm.

Find out more about Redberry on their website.

Sweet Nix Coffee and Cake Shop, Monikie Dundee

This family run coffee and cake shop serves up delicious goodies, all of which are handmade by owner Leanne Rankin.

You’ll find a selection of different scones and cakes on offer every week, including the likes of custard creams, carrot cake, cherry bakewells, Victoria sponge, fruit or plain scones and speciality scones. There’s also a gluten-free cake and different special every week, and you can order cakes for special occasions.

Can’t decide which to try first? An afternoon tea is the perfect way to sample some of Sweet Nix’s classic cakes and bakes. These need to be booked in advance so that everything can be made fresh to order, and you can book in by phone or Facebook message.

It’s open 10am to 4pm Thursdays to Sundays, with lunches and light bites also on offer daily. It’s dog-friendly and conveniently located to stop by for a slice of cake and a cuppa on your way to Monikie park (you can even ask for your cake to takeaway).
