Billie Lourd has remembered her late mother Carrie Fisher on Star Wars Day.

Fisher, who died aged 60 in 2016, was loved by millions of fans for playing Princess Leia in the space opera series.

On May the 4th – the date Star Wars fans celebrate the franchise due to its similarity to “may the force be with you” – Lourd paid tribute to her mother.

Alongside a picture of Fisher as Leia, Lourd, 27, said: “My heart goes out to everyone who has lost someone they loved during this beyond surreal time.”

She also spelled out “May the 4th” in emojis.

Lourd was not the only celebrity marking Star Wars Day on social media.

British actor John Boyega played Finn in the latest trilogy of movies and shared a series of behind-the-scenes snaps from filming.

“Happy Star Wars day everyone,” the 28-year-old said alongside a video of him and co-star Oscar Isaac during a break in filming caused by a sandstorm.

Boyega’s Instagram pictures showed him leaping from a platform against a green screen background.

Daisy Ridley starred alongside Boyega in the latest trilogy as Rey, and shared a message through the official Star Wars Twitter account.

In a video, the British actress wished fans a “very happy Star Wars Day” before using the force to summon a lightsabre.

Pedro Pascal, who stars in Disney+ series The Mandalorian as the titular bounty hunter, tweeted: “Travel wherever you want to in your dreams #MayThe4thBeWithYou.”

Mark Hamill, famous for his portrayal of Luke Skywalker, posted a gif of cartoon depictions of different Star Wars characters and said: “May The Fourth Bewitch You.”

Anthony Daniels, who has played cyborg C-3PO since 1977’s original Star Wars, celebrated May the 4th by reading an excerpt of his book on Instagram, detailing how he first became involved with the franchise.

Star Wars fans were given a gift by Disney on Monday.

The entertainment giant announced Oscar-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi will co-write and direct a new film in the franchise.
