Norway, the ‘Land of the midnight sun’ is a spectacular country and ideal holiday destination for those seeking something slightly off the beaten track. The Courier Travel takes a look at some of the highlights of this beautiful country
1. Geirangerfjord
Located towards the south of the country, Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO-protected area, is a tourist hot spot for visitors looking to go on a short cruise or excellent mountain walk.
2. Bryggen
The old wharf of Bergen, Bryggen is a testament to Norway’s rich heritage and culture. Over the years, fires have caused damage. Despite this, the historic wharf has been carefully restored close to its former glory. Fantastic wooden structures, this series of buildings helped Bergen attain its status as the ‘Gateway to the Fjrords’, acting as a focal point of the shipping industry.
3. Flamsbana Railway
Considered one of the greatest train rides in the world, the Flm Railway passes some of the most beautiful landscape in the world. The route takes you past waterfalls skirting the track as it ascends to the final station in Mydral. Regardless of the time of year you visit – whether during the summer or winter months – this train journey is a fantastic experience.
4. Pulpit Rock
Preikestolen or ‘Pulpit Rock’ (see top picture) is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Norway. Not for the faint hearted, the rock is a steep cliff, over 600 metres high. Its main appeal is that the rock is flat, providing a stunning view across the valley.
5. Oslo
The capital of Norway, Oslo is a growing city that has managed to retain large stretches of greenery, forests, and lakes. This means that outdoor activities are readily available to both locals and tourists alike.
6. Hardangerfjord
One of the longest Fjords in the world, Hardangerfjord is a fabulous sight, full of vibrant colour and boasting easily accessible trails that allow adventurers to traverse the varied terrain.
