A group of local writers have launched an anthology of stories and poems, each inspired by an exhibit at The McManus in Dundee.

Nethergate Writers are all members of Continuing as a Writer classes at Dundee University, where Thursday’s launch was held at the Tower Building, and appear at Waterstone’s in the city between 10am and 4pm tomorrow (Saturday) to sign copies of A Private View.

With 35 members drawn from Dundee, Angus, Fife and Perthshire, the group have appeared at Dundee Literary Festival, Dundee Rep and over the airwaves on Radio Tay. Their three previous books have topped the best-seller list at Waterstone’s Dundee.

Contributors include Dundee residents Catherine Young and Amanda Barclay, Stuart Wardrop and David Carson from Perthshire, Fifers Jane O’Neill and Paul Sykes, and Flora Davidson and Jean Langlands from the Angus contingent.

The pieces chosen for publication, all featuring colour illustrations of their inspirations, were chosen by tutor Esther Read to reflect the backgrounds and interests of the authors.

McManus creative learning officer Keri McGowan said: “The imaginative responses to the objects and artworks chosen by Nethergate Writers illuminate the city’s collections in new ways. The anthology is a new creative thread running through the cultural heritage of Dundee.”

A tour of the museum next Sunday (Oct 24), from 2 to 4pm, will be followed by some of the writers reading from the anthology, and there are several other events planned for the coming months.
