Abertay University a major player in new £100,000 games development competition

Abertay University will enhance its profile in the digital media industry today at the launch of a new £100,000 games development competition.

Details of industry body TIGA’s Games Contest, which is supported by Abertay’s Prototype Fund, will be revealed in London at a conference for more than 100 UK-based development studios.

Teams will compete for four £25,000 prizes, which have support packages from two leading studios, by developing new applications across three distinct categories including social web gaming.

The funding was announced by Creative Industries Minister Ed Vaizey at the NESTA Investment Conference earlier this week.

Paul Durrant, director of business development at Abertay University, said the contest will help to showcase the best talent in the gaming industry.

He said: ”Abertay University is working hard to give startups and young companies the opportunity to create original intellectual property supported by the Prototype Fund and use it to secure funding and grow their companies.

”Working with TIGA, Turbulenz and Antix gives us a fantastic opportunity to improve the success potential of the companies who receive our support,” he added.

Entries to the contest will be judged on criteria including market potential and the commercial viability of the business model being adopted.
