Bosses at Glenshee Ski Centre hope that fresh snowfall could extend what has already been an excellent season by a few more precious weeks.
Warmer weather has seen a drop in the number of open lifts, but skiing is continuing on one side of the hill and many runs remain complete.
One more decent flurry may be all it takes to ensure good skiing for a last few weeks and cap one the best seasons in years.
Snow in late November and early December gave a massive boost to the snow sports industry and Glenshee was among those reaping the rewards.
It ensured a much earlier start to the season than in 2009, when users had to wait until December 22 for the first runs to open.
Instead hundreds of skiers took to the slopes in near-perfect conditions every day throughout December, though they faced long journeys, with the Spittal of Glenshee road regularly closed.
Through the best of the season daily visitor numbers rose into the thousands.
Further flurries have kept extending the season and it is only in the past week or so, with rising March temperatures, that the covering at Glenshee has started to melt away.’Fantastic season’Nursery areas are now limited, but 12 of the 21 lifts remain in operation and most runs are complete, with Glenshee reporting “pockets of fresh snow on a hard-packed icy base.”
Ski centre director Stewart Davidson said, “It’s been a fantastic season for us and good skiing conditions have continued right up until this week.
“We’ve lost a fair bit of snow over the past seven days and one side of the hill is now closed because of the reduced coverage.”
He added, “A few flurries in the last day or two have whitened things up a bit, though, and we’ll be keeping an eye on the forecasts for more.
“There’s further snow forecast but we’ll just have to wait and see what it amounts to.”
Mr Davidson said, “There are still a number of runs open, however, and, whatever happens over the next few days, it’s been a very good season for us.”
