Stonehaven’s open-air pool readies for tourist season

The weather may not know what it is doing, but Stonehaven”s open-air pool will definitely be opened in five weeks” time to herald the start of summer.

The heated outdoor pool, a magnificent legacy of the Art Deco period, will be open from May 29 until September 5.

“Our band of volunteers is still working to ensure that the pool will be glistening and gleaming in all its glory by the end of May,” said Friends of the Pool chairman Mike Robins.

“Although it may seem like magic that the pool looks clean and fresh for the start of each new season, it takes several thousands of hours of hard work to make that happen.”

Over the next few weeks, the pool’s website will be refreshed and a promotional leaflet will be printed and distributed widely to encourage locals and visitors go for a swim in Stonehaven’s unique pool.

“Both our website and leaflet worked really well for us last summer,” Mr Robins said.

“The season was particularly successful despite the weather being less than perfect for much of the summer.

“We say the pool is cool when it’s hot and fun when it’s not, and we’re hoping that more people will come to enjoy it this year, regardless of the weather.”In 1930s Britain, lidos and open-air pools were very popular and research by the Friends has found that following a poll of Stonehaven householders in 1933, the pool was built the following year at a cost of £9529.
