Drivers caught in rush-hour traffic on the Forth Road Bridge were provided with a very welcome diversion as a team of charity fund-raisers “space-hopped” their way across.
Cash raised during the unusual fund-raiser will go to the LoveOliver charity established by Fifers Andy and Jennifer Gill following the death of their beloved baby son Oliver.
Andy, who teaches maths at Braeview Academy in Dundee, and Jennifer, a religious, moral and philosophical studies teacher at Waid Academy in Anstruther, are desperate to raise cash to investigate the causes of childhood cancer.
“Being told there was no longer hope of a cure for our gorgeous baby Oliver was the most awful, surreal and heartbreaking experience of our lives,” Jennifer previously told The Courier. “Oliver has changed our lives forever and as a result we now want to do whatever we possibly can to help other families in similar situations.”
Andy hopes www.loveoliver.org.uk will raise awareness of childhood cancer and help provide support for the devastated families left in its wake. Oliver was just 24 weeks when he died, but his parents are determined to ensure his death was not in vain.
“Until Oliver’s birth we did not know much about childhood cancer,” Jennifer said. “Now we know more than we would ever want to and know it can happen to anyone, at any time.
“We want to be able to help in any way we can and hope people will support the fund.”
Wednesday’s space-hop-athon was the latest in a list of fund-raisers. Hardy participants took it in turns to hop along the bridge, covering around half a mile each.
