Monifieth’s Blue Seaway park is target of more vandalism

The Blue Seaway is a popular place for families during the day, but its isolated location has made it a target for vandals after dark.

Fireraisers have been condemned for their latest attack at Monifieth’s Blue Seaway park.

Fire crews were called on Saturday night and discovered paper and carboard ablaze in a metal cage next to the play area.

The facility has been a regular target for vandals, who last month put the climbing frame out of action.

Police are continuing their inquiries into the weekend incident, although there was no one in the area when firefighters arrived around 8pm.

Although the play area was undamaged, the local authority has spent thousands repairing previous damage and Sidlaws councillor Margaret Thomson said she hopes fresh moves can be made to protect the park from vandals.

“We have really put a focus on keeping the park safe. It’s one of the biggest and most popular parks in Monifieth,” said Councillor Thomson.

“However, at this time of year it becomes harder and harder to keep track of the people that are using the park at night, with winter meaning darker nights starting earlier.”

Mrs Thomson believes improved lighting might help prevent attacks.

“Something that we are really trying to do is get more lights, so when it is pitch black we can see who is using the park.”

Ms Thomson added: “We aim to deal with these kinds of incidents or concerns almost immediately.

“The council currently has a good team together to deal with cleaning, and our community police officer will deal with these things as soon as he hears about them.”

“But if you can’t see people in there it makes looking after the park a lot more difficult.”
