Dundee punters putting their money on a Yes vote

Dundee and Perth punters are backing a Yes vote in the independence referendum, according to a major UK bookmaker.

William Hill said the referendum was proving to be a popular bet, with one London gambler laying down a hefty £600,000 predicting Scots would reject independence at the ballot box on September 18.

However, in Courier Country, all bets placed in Dundee have been for Scots to vote to break away from the union, with only 12% of Perth punters backing a No vote.

William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly said: “If the Scottish punters turn out to the voting booths as they have done to the betting shops, then we could well see a Yes vote when the referendum takes place in September.”

Mr Crilly said that 79% of all bets in Scotland on the independence referendum have been for a Yes vote, although Edinburgh has a 50/50 split.

In Aberdeen, 87% of all bets taken on the referendum are for a Yes vote, with 89% of independence wagers placed in Glasgow for the same result.

The odds currently stand at 1/8 for a No vote and 9/2 for Yes.

In London, 75% of all bets have been for a No vote including the £600,000 wager, which comprised one £400,000 bet and another of £200,000 at odds of 1/4 and 1/6.

Belfast and Cardiff are siding with their Scottish counterparts with 75% and 83% respectively of all bets for the same outcome.
