‘They were so great’ owner’s praise for polecat police

Zoe Smith is thrilled to have Gill the polecat back home.

Police officers have reunited a rogue polecat with her gobsmacked owners.

The PCs and the polecat crossed paths on Pitkerro Road when officers almost ran over the furry critter, before rushing to her rescue.

Gill had been AWOL for over 48 hours after head-butting her way out of her Fintry home.

The big-hearted bobbies spent some time at Longhaugh police station with the pet feeding it dog biscuits before returning her to her Cheviot Crescent home and delighted owners.

The departure of the one-year old who lives with a ferret, a dog and three cats sparked a search by owner Zoe Smith and her mother, Ann.

The pair roamed the streets following the disappearance on Tuesday, shouting the polecat’s name and launching a social media appeal to help find her.

After 48 hours and despite a number of sightings relayed via SnapChat Gill was still missing and the Smiths were beginning to give up hope.

Zoe said: “I honestly thought that there was no chance of getting her back. The phone was ringing for ages at around 11.40pm on Thursday and I was thinking, ‘you’ve got to be joking!’

“And then there was a knock at the door which my mum went down to get. It was the police. I thought, ‘oh God, something must have happened to Gill’.

“But then the officer came out of the car holding her. He said: ‘I guess this belongs to you’.”

The polecat was discovered late on Thursday night and Zoe and Ann are now delighted to be reunited with their pet.

“They found her on Pitkerro Road,” Zoe added. “They almost hit her with the car as she was crossing the road, but then one of the officers ran out and grabbed her.

“They were so great. They even fed her dog biscuits while they were looking after her at Longhaugh police station.

“I’m so pleased to have her back, but still in shock. She is definitely a lucky polecat.”
