Golfers’ £18,000 for Arbroath Relay for Life was ‘way beyond expectations’

A Ryder Cup-style golf event in Arbroath raised £18,000 for the town’s Relay for Life appeal.

Two teams of 14 golfers contested a very tight contest that went down to the wire at the Elliot golf links.

The funds raised will be added to the total for Arbroath Relay for Life campaign, which raises funds for Cancer Research UK.

After two days of golf, fun and camaraderie the Relay for Life Ryder Trophy was won by Team USA, by 18 points to 15.

Winning Team USA captain Jonny Booth said: “When we set out we hoped to have a good golf match, have some fun and raise some money for Arbroath’s Relay for Life. To raise so much money was way beyond our expectations.”

A slightly disappointed European team captain Scott Strachan said: “The match could have gone either way but we certainly enjoyed ourselves and really there were no losers this weekend.

“We will dust ourselves down and get ready for another crack at Team USA next year.”

The cheque was presented at a ceremony at Arbroath Artisan Golf Club where singer Danielle Leigh Emerson entertained the players and large crowd.

Accepting the cheque, Arbroath Relay for Life chairman Ian Angus said the total raised was a boost ahead of the 24-hour relay event at Arbroath Cricket Club on September 20.

He said: “I was delighted to be asked along to receive a cheque for such a large sum. Everyone involved clearly had a great time. The event was very impressive and a resounding success.

“We have tried this year to involve more people and different community groups in the relay.

“This allows people who could not normally participate in Relay for Life to take part, and feel that they have contributed.

“The results have been fantastic and we cannot thank the people, businesses and various groups in Arbroath enough for their support.”

A comedy event in aid of Relay for Life was held at Cliffburn Hotel in Arbroath on Saturday night.
