Former policeman aiming to Kickstart filming in Dundee

Dundee dream: actor and writer Adam McNamara.
Dundee dream: actor and writer Adam McNamara.

A Dundee actor and writer hopes the city’s streets will soon fit the bill for a new television series based on his time as a police officer.

Adam McNamara served as a Tayside constable for seven years before the acting bug bit for good in 2008.

The 37-year-old former St John’s High School pupil, who has appeared in shows including EastEnders and River City, has launched a £3,000 Kickstarter campaign to fund a trailer showcasing serial drama The JOB.

Game of Thrones actor Dan Portman, who plays Podrick Payne in the drama, has already signed on to appear in the trailer.

The idea for the new show came after Adam and writing partner Ryan Henderson became disillusioned with exisiting police dramas.

Adam said: “I always compared being a real copper with the cops I saw on television.

“I know they have to have poetic licence in cop dramas and I appreciate that. You can’t have a police officer wanting a trace on a telephone line and they have to wait two weeks, so I understand they have to cut corners.

“So, instead of focusing on procedures and crime, ours comes from a different slant.

“We decided to centre on the humans in the uniforms, their private lives that sometimes mirror situations they deal with themselves and how they cope, amongst many other story lines.

“Police procedure and actual crime is secondary.”

The Kickstarter campaign, which has reached a third of its £3,000 target, will fund a “moving calling card” to present to television companies.

Adam said: “The cast we have attached already for this teaser trailer is incredibly exciting.

“If we were lucky enough to get a commission, my hope would be to set it and film it in Dundee. I’d love to come back to my home city and film something.”

Adam was accepted to drama school when he was 30 after serving as a constable in Forfar and Dundee.
