An escaped parrot found on the Law in Dundee has been handed in to a vet.

The £1,000 African grey was believed to have been involved in a case of animal cruelty after it was found although this is not now thought to be the case.

The bird was apparently found tied to a tree by a woman who was walking her dog.

Staff at the Parkside Veterinary Group, where the African grey is being cared for, said there was no foul play involved.

Veterinarian Karen Fearn said: “It’s not the case that it was tied up. The bird has definitely not been badly treated.

“There are no injuries to the parrot and it is in a really nice condition.

“The tether attached to the parrot’s foot is quite frayed we think its owner was keeping it outside in this lovely sunny weather and it has pecked through the rope and flown away.”

It is thought that the bewildered bird made its way to the Law before becoming entangled by the remains of its tether when landing on a low branch.

Becca Cunningham, from Parkside, said: “It’s a healthy parrot and is very used to being handled. You don’t always see them in such good condition.

“It has all its feathers and is a good weight. It was whistling earlier but we haven’t had it talking just yet.”

African grey parrots can live to be 60 and are well-known for their ability to mimic human speech and are commonly kept as pets.

The Scottish SPCA will look after the bird until its owner can be found.
