A Methil prisoner who brandished a fire extinguisher at a Reliance guard while recuperating in Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital has been sentenced to 130 days in prison.
William Ian Kemp (44), of Erskine Court, Methil, admitted committing a breach of the peace on October 13, 2009, by threatening Alan Glass and Brian Anderson with violence and brandishing a fire extinguisher at Mr Glass.
At Dundee Sheriff Court he further admitted assaulting Mr Glass while being attached to him by a handcuff chain.
Depute fiscal David Cobb told the court Kemp had been remanded in custody in October 2009 and was admitted to Ninewells Hospital with a suspected heart attack.
When Kemp learned he was being moved from a private room to a ward ahead of being discharged he became agitated and aggressive.
Mr Glass handcuffed Kemp and took him into the grounds of the hospital. Kemp then managed to pick up a fire extinguisher and brandished it at Mr Glass, who was then struck by the handcuff chain.
Kemp admitted it had been a “moment of madness” and that he felt “disgusted” and realised a custodial sentence was inevitable.
Sheriff George Way told Kemp, “You have to learn that officers have to do their job.”
He added, “The way to bring this home to you is to impose a custodial sentence of 130 days.”
