Former Hilton Hotel checking out from Dundee waterfront spot

The latest stages of demolition work.
The latest stages of demolition work.

It was once one of Dundee’s more salubrious landmarks, gracing the waterfront for 25 years, but now the former Hilton Hotel resembles something from a warzone.

The four-star, 129-bedroom hotel played host to Margaret Thatcher, who opened the then Stakis Earl Grey in 1988.

Hilton took over in 2000 and it is estimated that the global giants hosted 500 weddings and served more than 1.5 million breakfasts since then.

Today though it looks a sorry state, teetering on the edge of the Tay with only one exterior wall remaining intact as the demolition project nears an end, clearing the way for regeneration.

The hotel checked out its final guests at the end of March before the building was stripped out and the demolition team moved in.

The venue, which has hosted politicians, major conferences and weddings, is being pulled down as part of the area’s £1 billion redevelopment.

Hilton does retain a presence in the city with the rebranding of the Landmark Hotel as the new Double Tree Hotel. The new high-end hotel is one of a clutch in the city, including the Apex Hotel and Spa at City Quay.

And while the old Hilton is quickly disappearing, across the road another boutique hotel is counting down the days to when it opens its doors to its first guests.

Malmaison Dundee is due to open on December 1, marking one of the first tangible steps of Dundee’s £1 billion regeneration.

The £15 million restoration project had initially been due to open in July but a slipping development schedule saw the original date put back.

However, despite the delays excited foodies and bar-hoppers have already guaranteed a fully-booked Christmas party period.
