Oh, deer Granny’s holiday inspires ‘vulgar’ Christmas jumpers

A Scots grandmother has inspired a range of Christmas jumpers featuring risqu reindeer.

Jen Barrett, from Killearn, near Stirling, spotted rutting deer while on holiday in Moidart on the west coast of Scotland and mentioned it to her grandson, Ben Greenock.

Graphic designer Ben then elaborated on the idea and turned it into a jumper.

Mrs Barrett said: “We go to Moidart every year as a family and the deer are rutting and that’s where the idea came from. It’s just a bit of fun and my grandson thought it was a good idea.”

Ben, 24, has now set up a company, Woopwoo Christmas Jumpers, selling a range of knitwear including some less lewd designs such as hugging snowmen and Christmas trees.

He said his love of Christmas-themed apparel came from an applique jumper made for him by his grandmother.

He said: “I have two brothers and six cousins, so there’s nine of us altogether and one Christmas, 2008, she gave us all Christmas jumpers.

“It was before Christmas jumpers really became popular again and as their popularity grew, I thought I wanted to take it further and bring out our own this year.

“We wanted to do something different. It was a collaborative thing.

“They have been really popular. I’ve not really thought about what I’m going to do next year. I just want to get this year done and take it from there.”

He said church-goer Jen was not shocked by the idea of mating deer on clothing and both she and his grandfather Ken, 82, had sported the rude jumpers.

“She’s got a sense of humour, she thinks it’s funny,” he said. “She does think it’s vulgar and what-not but she appreciates it’s just a joke.

“Granddad’s got an even better sense of humour he’s probably got the best sense of humour of us all, but I don’t know if he knows what he’s wearing half the time.”

However, Ben added he has no plans to kit out the rest of his family in the knitwear in time for Christmas.

He said: “I have younger cousins they can maybe wear one of the snowman ones. I am going to be wearing the one my gran made me I’ve worn it every Christmas since, so I’m staying true to the original.

“It has a Santa on it but he’s not doing anything rude.”
