A new hospice in India has been named after a young Dundee charity worker who died this year at the age of 25.
Jade McMahon, who worked at the Positive Steps charity in Dundee, passed away suddenly on July 15.
The charity has helped build a hospice in India for women and children suffering from HIV and AIDS and, to celebrate Jade’s memory, it has decided to name it the Jade McMahon Memorial Hospice.
The official opening ceremony was held last month and Jade’s family is now helping raise funds to help with the hospice’s running costs.
They are to host a fundraising bingo night in St Peter and Paul’s Church Hall, Byron Street, on Sunday.
Jade’s aunt, Sheila McMahon, said: ”We chose to have a bingo night in the church because Jade was a pupil at the school and used to enjoy going to the prize bingo at the same church hall with her great granny when she was a little girl.
”Jade was a worker with Positive Steps, and as a paid employee her job was to support homeless people into their own tenancy and to help them to sustain their tenancies once they had their own homes.
”So she had to develop relationships with her clients, help them improve their lifestyles which might have involved drug and alcohol misuse and support them if there were any court proceedings against them.
”She really cared for her clients and never judged them.”
Prior to that she had worked with Dundee City Council’s housing department and a number of housing associations.
”She also did her own fundraising for charity and once did a parachute jump from a plane to raise funds for her friend who had a disabled child.
”Jade loved life, was popular and outgoing, and had a great sense of humour.
”Some of her most special memories, apart from the many family gatherings, were a trip to New York where she watched the sun go down from the Empire State building and going to festivals, including T in the Park and Belladrum.
”She packed a lot into her 25 years.”
Doors open at St Peter and Paul’s Church at 6.30pm on Sunday, with eyes down at 7pm.
Tickets cost £2 at the door, which includes refreshments and one bingo book.
Funds raised will be channelled through Positive Steps as a registered charity.
