Painting team has Stonehaven Open Air Pool licked

The Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool have brushed up their decorating skills, to apply 450 litres of paint to the attraction.

Amid the recent warm weather, volunteers have been out in force to give the pool the year’s first coating.

The pool is due to open on Saturday, May 28, and this season will benefit from a new £42,000 boiler system.

With the machinery fitted, final preparations are under way to ensure the site is cleaned, maintained and ready to open to the public.

David Dobbie, who organises the workforce, said, “The volunteers have been working flat out in the good weather. To give an idea of the task, each year we apply around 450 litres of paint to the pool the equivalent of 90-100 gallons.

“Although this is a drop in the ocean compared to the 290,000 gallons of sea water it takes to fill the pool, the work is tiring and time-consuming and the Friends are very grateful to the 20 volunteers who have been attending regularly to get the pool looking its best.

“Of course, we all get our reward when the pool opens, with the sea water filtered and heated to 29C.”

It is a 50-metre pool, set in an art-deco listed building. This season it will be open daily until September 4.

The Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool were formed to ensure the future of the pool when it was threatened with closure in the 1990s and is now responsible for maintenance and operation, alongside Aberdeenshire Council.
