A weightlifting Mearns grandmother has defended her world championship and has signalled she wants to compete in a 2017 tournament.
Jean McConville took the gold medal at the World Masters Games in Turin, totalling 105kg.
The 57-year-old from Pitskelly trains three times a week at Newlife Fitness Club in Laurencekirk, owned by Gary and Sally Fairweather.
She is a qualified nurse and midwife but retired from the NHS and retrained as a manual therapist with a special interest in sports injuries.
Talking about her gold medal victory, Jean said: “It’s a great feeling standing on the podium and hearing Flower of Scotland playing out over the stadium but you can’t win a gold medal on your own.
‘‘You need the support and help of many people Gary for his personal training, my husband Stuart, John McNiven my technical coach in Glasgow, Garry Nimmo my manual therapist and especially all the guys and girls at Newlife who have encouraged me especially when things didn’t always go to plan.
‘I have my sights set on the next World Masters Games to be held in Auckland, New Zealand in 2017, but before that there are the World Masters Weightlifting Championships in Copenhagen next August.”
