Paperboy describes shock of finding pensioner dead on doorstep
ByThe Courier Reporter
A paperboy has described the moment he discovered a Dundee pensioner lying dead on his doorstep.
Darren McKay, 14, was delivering papers on Sunday morning in Fintry when he found Billy Forbes.
The 68-year-old had collapsed after returning from a barbecue the night before and had been there for several hours before Darren turned up.
The Braeview Academy pupil said: “I had just thrown my bike down to go into the garden to put the paper through the door when I saw a man lying across his doorstep.
“I didn’t really know what was wrong with him, but I got an awful shock to see someone lying there.”
Darren, from Fintry, said he wasn’t very sure what to do so he delivered a paper next door but then immediately went back to where Billy lay.
He said: “I knew at that point that something was wrong. He really didn’t look OK.”
Darren tried to phone his mum and dad, but when he couldn’t contact them, he got help from a man who was out walking in the street.
The man called an ambulance and the pair remained at the scene until it arrived, but Mr Forbes was pronounced dead.
Police say the exact cause of his death is still unknown.
