A councillor has called for the owners of run-down garages and delapidated sheds in his ward to spruce them up.

Maryfield councillor Craig Melville has been contacted by a number of residents on Anstruther Road and Sandeman Street, complaining about the unsightly lock-ups.

The council has now written to the registered owners of the garages and sheds, asking them to take action.

“A lot of residents have complained,” Mr Melville said. “There’s 48 sheds at Sandeman Street and 10 garages on Anstruther Road.

“People are complaining about the poor condition, the graffiti, the weeds. They have been patient but it has been going on for some time.”

The surrounding wall at the garages on Anstruther Road has partly collapsed at its junction with Loraine Road and the road sign has disappeared in the rubble.

“The maintenance of this wall is the joint responsibility of the owners,” Mr Melville added.

“The council wants to coordinate the repair. The legal manager of the council Roger Mennie has written to the owners but not everyone’s responded.”

And the councillor said that, out of the 48 sheds at Sandeman Street, rent is no longer paid on 23.

“A 14-day period of notice was put on them before Christmas.”
