When you wish upon a star your dreams really do come true, as one brave young Fifer has found out.
Milo Carter was born with three holes in his heart and has battled a rare and aggressive cancer in both kidneys which spread to his lungs and liver.
The primary two pupil, described by his mum as her “little Tonka truck” thought he was having just a normal day at Auchtertool Primary School on Thursday but that was all about to change.
First, mum Sarah appeared in the classroom, followed by former Miss Scotland Nicola Wood, businessman husband Garreth and Mickey Mouse.
The trio revealed that Milo, little brother Noah and mum and dad Sarah and Kevin are off on a trip of a lifetime to Walt Disney World in Florida all thanks to the charity When You Wish Upon a Star, which grants the wishes of poorly youngsters.
It is not the first time Milo, who will be six on September 17, has met Nicola and Garreth, who are patrons of the 25-year-old charity.
The big-hearted duo accompanied him and many other families on a dream trip to Lapland last December, having raised more than £100,000, performing random acts of kindness while taking part in the annual Gumball Rally from Miami to Ibiza, for the excursion.
Now the charity has made Milo’s wish to go to Disney World come true.
Cuddling his very own Mickey, the youngster said he was “excited” by the thought of seeing his heroes, including characters from Inside Out.
Milo has endured more in his short life than others face in a lifetime.
Born with three holes in his heart and suffering a nine-hour operation at only 72-hours-old, the youngster battled through.
But then, just months after brother Noah was born, Milo faced his second mammoth battle for survival when he was diagnosed with Wilms tumour, a rare and aggressive cancer in both kidneys which had already spread to his lungs and liver.
It meant the loss of one kidney but Milo started school last year free of chemotherapy and is now doing really well, according to Sarah.
She said the dream trip is “quite overwhelming”.
“It is amazing and I cannot wait to see their faces when we get there, they will be so happy,” she said.
