The former chairman of East Fife FC will not face trial over allegations he scammed more than £35,000 in benefits.
William Gray was accused of claiming incapacity benefit that he was not entitled to between 2004 and 2012.
Prosecutors had claimed he failed to give notification to the Department for Work and Pensions of a change in circumstances that he knew would affect his entitlement to incapacity benefit.
The charge against Gray stated that he was working as a self-employed scrap metal dealer and that he obtained incapacity benefit of £35,405.13 to which he was not entitled.
But the Crown has dropped the charges.
Mr Gray, 61, was chairman of East Fife from 2006 until 2009, and was at the helm when the club won promotion in 2008.
He appeared at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court earlier this year for a pre-trial hearing. It was due to call again for a further hearing but was treated as “not called”.
A Crown Office spokesman said: “It is the duty of the Crown to keep cases under review and after full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the case, including the available admissible evidence, the procurator fiscal decided that there should be no further proceedings taken at this time. The Crown reserves the right to proceed in the future should further evidence become available.”
