A Fife school will remain closed on Tuesday after the structural damage caused by last week’s storms.
Storm Gertrude caused significant damage to Kirkland High School’s roof in Methil overnight on Friday and pupils were sent home on health and safety grounds.
The school was closed again on Monday as repair work continued, but plans to reopen the school on Tuesday have been hampered by the latest windy weather to strike the region.
Ronnie Ross, head teacher at Kirkland High School, said: “Despite the work being done over the weekend on repairs to our school roof progress has been hampered by the weather conditions.
“The workers continue to work when it is safe to do so on securing the roof so that repairs can be undertaken.
“Most of the debris has been removed and, Storm Henry permitting, this will be completed on Tuesday.
“All services are working well together to get the school operating as normal as soon as possible.
“We are extremely grateful to the workers who are undertaking this massive task.
“After taking advice from the Property and Building Services we have made the decision to keep the school closed to pupils on Tuesday February 2. The health and safety of our pupils is our priority.
“Senior pupils sitting preliminary examinations are being accommodated at Buckhaven High School and we are grateful to the staff at Buckhaven for enabling this to happen.
“All pupils have been advised through our groupcall system to continue working on course work through Scholar and Glow.
“Staff will ensure that all pupils are back on track when they return to school.
“Our staff are working in school and in other schools helping where there are teachers absences etc.
“We are grateful to our parents and carers for their understanding at this difficult and challenging time.”
Mr Ross added that staff remain hopeful that the school will be open on Wednesday to all pupils, although they are awaiting the outcome of the report from Property and Building Services.
“We continue to look at contingency plans if the situation prevents us from allowing pupils access to the school,” he concluded.
Parents are advised to keep an eye on Fife Direct school closure updates for the latest.
