Drunk man subjected teenage girls to violent and sexual remarks in supermarket toilets

Two teenagers were followed into the female toilet at a supermarket by a drunk man who then took off his t-shirt and made offensive sexual comments.

The two women, aged 18 and 19, had gone to use the toilets at the Tesco superstore in Dunfermline Town Centre when the incident occurred.

At Dunfermline Sheriff Court, James Beattie, 42, of Hill Street, Dunfermline, admitted that on August 1 he behaved in a threatening or abusive manner by following two females into the toilets, throwing a mobile phone, removing his T-shirt and repeatedly uttering sexual remarks and threats of violence.

Depute fiscal Jade Doig said the women had seen Beattie outside the toilets leaning on a wall, talking on his phone.

When they had gone inside to use the toilets, they heard him say: “Girls, girls”. He appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and said to them “Could you refuse this?”, before throwing his phone into a sink.

He then took off his t-shirt to leave himself bare-chested and made sexually offensive remarks to them. He then said: “I could knock you both out and you wouldn’t know what happened after that.”

As they left the toilets, Beattie then said “You’re f****** dead, blondie” to one of them. They phoned the police.

Defence solicitor Ian Beatson said his client had “consumed too much alcohol and has no recollection whatsoever”, and was “disgusted with himself and ashamed”.

Sheriff Craig McSherry said he would impose a community payback order with 140 hours of unpaid work. He also ordered Beattie to pay both victims £250 in compensation.
