Woman who attacked partner with potato knife jailed for a year

A woman who threatened her partner and stabbed him with a potato knife on Hogmanay has been jailed for a year by Sheriff Norrie Stein at Arbroath.

Sheriff Stein told Anne Murray Craig Bailey (34) on Tuesday that it seemed “very fortunate” her partner who she is now separated from did not suffer more serious injuries.

Bailey (34), described as a prisoner at Cornton Vale, admitted that on December 31 at Leonard Street, Arbroath, she assaulted a man with punches and kicks, stated she was going to kill him, attempted to stab him with a fish slice and a knife, and repeatedly stabbed him on the arm and legs with a knife, while on bail.

Depute fiscal Alistair Learmonth said the couple were drinking at a friend’s house. They began arguing and she started “calling him names and swinging punches at him.”

Mr Learmonth said they were pulled apart and Bailey shouted out, “I’m away to stab f*** out of you” and she picked up a fish slice. Bailey went to the kitchen and shouted she was coming through with a knife. Her partner held the door closed to stop her.

She kept shouting, “I will f****** kill you.”

Once through, Bailey used the fish slice to try to stab him in the side.

“She realised it wasn’t a knife and it just bent and didn’t break the skin so she went back into the kitchen and picked up a small potato knife with a black handle,” said Mr Learmonth.

Her partner at this point was sitting down and Bailey began stabbing his legs. Mr Learmonth said her partner could “feel the blade going into his arms and legs.”

One of the others in the house got up and managed to stand between the two. An ambulance was called.

Bailey’s solicitor Keith Sym said his client had been a victim of domestic violence at least 10 times and had feared her partner intended to cause her harm.

Sheriff Stein backdated the sentence to January 3.
