A green light has been given to a permanent one-way traffic system along Forfar’s busy Castle Street.
Almost two years after a trial during town centre improvement works, councillors have agreed to adopt the arrangement southward from Canmore Street to Myre Road.
The authority says the scheme is being brought in response to a public consultation and will ease town centre traffic flow.
But the infrastructure services committee decision follows concerns the key thoroughfare will become little more than a corridor between Forfar’s two big supermarkets after plans for a new Asda store were also approved.
The one-way scheme will cost £12,000 to put in place.
Infrastructure services convener David May said the works would improve the town centre for “traders, shoppers and motorists.”
He said, “The majority of those who responded to the public consultation were in favour of a one way south-bound traffic system between Canmore Street and Myre Road and I am pleased the council has listened to feedback in delivering this proposal.”
The committee were also told that an objection had been raised by a member of the public concerned about the effect on cyclists and pedestrians.
However, cyclists are expected to be able to use Queen Street and Canmore Street as an alternative to the affected section of Castle Street and the system will also allow possible future footpath widening to benefit pedestrians.
