Church decides shortlist of candidates to succeed Dr John Mantle as Bishop of Brechin

The Scottish Episcopal Church has unveiled the shortlist of candidates for the office of the Bishop of Brechin.

Five candidates have been selected by a church preparatory committee to fill the role left by the late Rt Rev Dr John Mantle, who died in November after a battle with cancer.

Consisting of two archdeacons and three reverend canons, the next stage of the selection process will be a meeting of each of the candidates with members of an electoral synod next month.

The Venerable Dr Nigel Peyton, the Archdeacon of Newark, is shortlisted, hoping to return to Tayside after spending his early ministry years in the region.

He is joined by Paul Ferguson, the Archdeacon of Cleveland, while the Rev Canons David Bayne, Alison Peden and Alvyn Pettersen complete the list.

The Most Rev David Chillingworth, from the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, said, “We hope that prayerful discernment in the electoral synod will enable us to elect a new bishop who will lead the Diocese of Brechin in its future ministry and mission.”

The church hopes to install the new bishop on Wednesday, May 18.
