Arbroath mechanic earns lorry driver’s licence at 18

An 18-year-old Arbroath mechanic has become one of the youngest people in the country to pass his lorry driver’s licence.

Thomas Gibb comes from generations of lorry-driving stock and followed his father Neil’s (46) footsteps to pass his test at the first attempt.

Currently working six days a week at local firm Geddes, the teenager is keen to fit in some solo driving time and plans to get out on the road as soon as possible.

Neil’s father was also a lorry driver and to see his own son gaining the Large Goods Vehicle licence at such a young age has filled him with pride.

He said, “It was just quite recently that they changed the age from 21 down to 18 and he is certainly the only person around this area that has passed it.

“I have got my own business and have been on the go for 26 years after I started working with his grandfather.

“Thomas has been up at Geddes since he was 14 and he has already got quite a good head on him. The only time he can get out to drive is on a Sunday when he is not working.

“I will go with him the first couple of times, but he is keen to get out on his own.”

To pass the test Thomas had to sit three different theory tests and had to undergo rigorous competency checks.

Neil added, “I’m really chuffed to bits for him. Everybody you speak to doesn’t have a bad word to say about him and his attitude is great.

“He really is the perfect son in my eyes.”
