Police have launched an investigation after a 64-year-old Angus woman had to undergo surgery after being left with shattered wrists.

Details also emerged of the woman’s eight-mile bus journey home to Montrose in considerable pain following the incident.

Police say they were made aware of the woman’s injuries by staff at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

Investigations are taking place in the Brechin area and police want to talk to anyone ”who may have witnessed this incident or have any information regarding who may be responsible”.

The woman was visiting family in Brechin when she left to catch a bus to go back to Montrose. On the way to the bus stop an incident occured at the stairs leading from Hillview into East Mill Brae.

The woman suffered broken wrists but managed to make her way back into Hillview despite the fact she would have been in great distress and pain.

The woman was able to get on the bus and travelled to Montrose without receiving any medical assistance.

A police spokesman gave details of the bus journey and said the woman had been left with ”considerable injuries”.

She eventually arrived back at the care home where she lives in Montrose and worried staff called for a nurse to examine her. She was then taken to Ninewells, where she remains after having surgery.

The incident happened last Wednesday but the police only got involved on Friday after they were told by hospital staff.

Officers have spoken to the woman in Ninewells. It is believed she told them she had fallen down the stairs but an investigation is under way to see if anyone can shed light on what happened.

The elderly female is of slight build, approximately 5 ft tall with white hair, and was wearing a dark jacket at the material time.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the police on 0300 111 2222.
