A report of a person lying in the water at Stonehaven turned out to be a market buoy.

The 999 call sparked an emergency response from the coastguard and the Aberden all-weather lifeboat and Stonehaven inshore lifeboat.

The report was received just before 9pm on Tuesday night.

Stonehaven rescue officers responded in full water rescue equipment but were stood down shortly after arriving on scene.

A spokesman for the coastguard said: “The object reported as a person face down in the water turned out to be a market buoy.”
