Former Sugababes singer Heidi Range was among 400 mourners who today marked the passing of popular Angus publican David “George” Williams.

The singer last seen on ITV’s Dancing on Ice – is a close friend of Mr Williams’ son Ross, who is a hairdresser in London.

She made the journey to Arbroath to pay her respects at a service at Parkgrove Crematorium near Friockheim before a wake at The Portcullis Bar.

Mr Williams, 67, originally from Sunderland, was best known as the popular face of The Portcullis Bar which he ran with his wife Lorraine for the last 36 years.

He died following a long battle with cancer.

Born in Sunderland as David Williams he picked up the nickname ‘George’ during his time with 45 Commando in Arbroath.

His colleagues gave him the nickname because he spoke with a Geordie accent.

Mr Williams attended Redby Secondary Modern School and worked in a local supermarket after leaving school.

In 1970 Mr Williams joined the Royal Marines and during his military career he was stationed on HMS Fearless for three years and posted to RM Condor where he served with Yankee and Zulu companies.

Mr Williams met his wife Lorraine while at RM Condor and the couple were married at the Windmill Hotel in 1976.

He left the Royal Marines that year for a job offshore with Halliburton’s before taking a part-time job as barman at The Portcullis.

Mr Williams eventually became manager of The Portcullis, where he worked for a total of 36 years, the last 12 as licensee.

He is survived by sons Ryan, David and Ross, and grandchildren Leo, Millie, Lexi and Freddie.

His son Ross said: “He was the most amazing man and he was the most amazing dad. Over 400 people turned up at his funeral, which shows how loved he was.”

He described his mum as the love of his dad’s life. Ross said that his mum plans to continue running the pub following his death.

He added that he had been overwhelmed by the support from everyone who knew his father including his close friend Heidi.

The singer did not wish to make comment.
