A Victorian tourist attraction has opened to the public for the first time since its recent restoration.

The Inglis Memorial Hall Library in Edzell has been restored to its former Victorian splendour thanks to funding from Angus Council and the Rural Tayside Programme.

The hall is a unique visitor attraction and a key destination on the county’s tourism trail.

The library of 6,000 volumes, given to the village by Lieutenant-Colonel RW Inglis at the end of the 19th century, is considered to be the best preserved example of a Victorian public library in the United Kingdom.

A council spokesman said: “This superb facility has now been brought into the 21st century, as a visitor centre for the people of Edzell and Angus.

“It is a beautiful and peaceful space in which to explore the history of the Inglis family, the library and the area.”

The visitor centre will be open from Tuesday to Saturday between 2pm and 4pm, and at other times by appointment by calling 01356 625536.
