Angus farmer and contractor Campbell Robertson

Post Thumbnail

Angus farmer and contractor David Campbell Robertson, known as Campbell, has died aged 80 after a short illness.

Mr Robertson, pictured, grew up on the family farm of Hilton of Guthrie, near Friockheim, and was steeped in the world of farming from his early years.

His father had been an early advocate of mechanisation and Mr Robertson, along with his late brother Ian, became an accomplished operator of some revolutionary machinery.

Combine harvesting in particular was an area where he excelled. His ability with machines while working alongside his father had not gone unnoticed by contractor Carnegie Fullarton who had contact with the family through the use of Massey Harris machinery.

This led to Campbell getting work with Fullerton, contract combining with some of the first harvesters in Angus.

After starting with Massey Harris and Massey Ferguson machines, several other makes were used before settling on the favoured brand of Claas.

This is still a part of the Robertson operation today, with many of Mr Robertson’s original customers still on the books.

As well as harvest contracting, drainage work became part of the business. The Robertsons had one of the first JCB diggers in the area as they used their mechanical knowledge to operate large-scale labour- saving drainage machines.

In recent years Mr Robertson’s skills at the wheel of the old Massey Harris machines were seen at the Massey Harris working events staged by his brother Ian at Guthrie.

Mr Robertson is survived by wife Catherine, daughterKay and sons Ian and Hamish, who continue to run the farming and contracting business at Guthrie.
