The trial of a teenager accused of murdering Monifieth grandmother Sandra Malcolm has been delayed until July.

The Legal Aid Board of South Africa sent a new attorney to the court to act on behalf of 18-year-old accused, Shereen Prince.

Last week Prince abandoned her bail application and her then legal aid lawyer said the she was fit to stand trial.

The new lawyer assigned to the case requested it be postponed until a new date on July 9 to allow for further inquiry as to whether she will be able to stand trial.

Eric Ntabazilia from the South African Prosecuting Authority said: “The new lawyer who came on board this morning requested a postponement to July 9 for referral for preliminary enquiry on whether the accused will be able to stand trial.

“Basically they have gone back to where they were at the first appearance.”

Sandra Malcolm, 74, originally from Monifieth, died in her Cape Town home in April.

Her body was discovered by her grandson who had climbed through a window to gain access to the house when she did not answer the door.

An autopsy established the cause of death as multiple stab wounds.

Following a prolonged investigation, the teenager, thought to be from the Citrusdal, north of Cape Town, was arrested and appeared before Muizenberg Magistrates Court on Monday May 11.

Police in the Western Cape have not ruled out the possibility of more suspects.

Western Cape Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said: “The investigation is ongoing and progress is being made.”
