‘A shocking situation’ drivers urged to think safety first outside Inverbrothock Primary School

‘A shocking situation’ drivers urged to think safety first outside Inverbrothock Primary School

Arbroath parents have been slammed for their inconsiderate behaviour behind the wheel around a town primary school.

Residents of the area around Inverbrothock primary have claimed the start and end of the school day is “an accident waiting to happen” as vehicles clamour for a parking space to drop off and pick up children.

The Arbroath situation is similar to that experienced on a daily basis at schools across the district, but after witnessing a string of near-misses one local from Kirkton Place has urged parents to put safety first for their youngsters.

The cul-de-sac is a favourite stopping place for parents, but Rose Thomson said the morning and afternoon traffic situation is becoming intolerable.

“It’s a shocking situation and we’ve tried everything to get parents to be responsible but all that is in their mind is getting a parking space as close to the school as possible.

“Fair enough get your children to school, but often parents then stand around chatting while their cars are blocking driveways or parked in a bad place.

“Some of these cars are coming from pretty nearby and instead of walking children up the path to the school they’re bringing the car to save just a couple of minutes and creating a nightmare.”

The pensioner added: “There have been accidents and scrapes and one of the worst situations is when delivery vans get stuck up in the parking situation.

“I had to grab a young lad just before a delivery van came along the road. He was shaking and I dread to think what would have happened if I hadn’t seen it coming.

“Cars are parked nose to tail and you just can’t see what’s coming into the street. Service buses also just have to sit and wait to get through.

“If we go out in the afternoon before 2.30 we can’t get back to our own doors until the school is finished because they just pour into the street and park anywhere,” said Mrs Thomson.

“Speaking to neighbours they are pretty fed up with the situation. We’ve spoken to the police but it’s up to the parents to be more responsible.”

A spokesman for Angus Council said: “We would like to take this opportunity to remind drivers to park considerately. Any cars parking illegally should be reported to Police Scotland on 101.”
