Craft brewers from across Scotland said cheers to the inaugural Angus Brewfest at a sell-out weekend event in Forfar.

The Strathmore Hall at Forfar mart was packed with 500 Saturday revellers who enjoyed sampling the creations of independent brewers and distillers, with food and music adding to the recipe for success.

Angus Farmers’ Market developed the Brewfest plan and the runaway success of the debut event is almost certain to see it become an annual fixture on their calendar.

The drinks line-up featured Angus businesses including Ogilvy vodka, the Gin Bothy at Lintrathen, Kirrie Ales and Mor Brewing from Kellas as well as other Courier Country names such as Cairn o’ Mohr and Eden Mill.

Angus Farmers Market manager and Brewfest coordinator Carol Robbie said: “At our farmers’ market we have a few brewers who come along regularly so we thought it would be a good idea to get others involved in this brand new venture and there has been a great response, both from businesses and customers.

“We have had a lot of help from local businesses and accountants EQ sponsored the tasting glasses so we are grateful to everyone who has supported this first Brewfest,” she said.

Angus Depute Provost Alex King opened the first Brewfest cask and said it was impressive to see the array of beers and spirits on offer.

“In this year of Scottish food and drink it is wonderful to see so many talented and successful producers at this showcase event,” he said.

“Entrepreneurship is clearly alive and thriving in the county’s food and drink sector.

“Angus’ top class tasty produce is already world-renowned and features on the finest menus.

“The brewers and distillers here today show that our drinks sector is also claiming its place at the top table with a tipple to suit every taste.

“It should be a source of great pride for us all that the quality, flavour and standard of our Angus larder attracts so many fans and achieves such customer loyalty.

“All of the producers represented here are part of that. Thank you for your ambition, vision and tenacity it is the liquid spirit of Angus.”
