Doctor’s report call as police officer may not be fit for trial

Forfar Sheriff Court.

The trial of a Tayside policewoman accused of threatening to kill another woman may not proceed due to concerns over her health.

Paula Jane Wales is accused of acting in an aggressive manner at a house in Grange Road, Monifieth, and kicking a door there last summer.

The Monifieth woman was due to face trial over the charges, which she denies, next month.

A doctor has been asked to address whether she is capable of standing trial. Defence agent Alasdair Gillies said the report was instructed after a previous pre-trial hearing last Tuesday.

“I have spoken to her doctor, who has expressed some concerns and was preparing a report.

“I had anticipated that this would be available today, but unfortunately it isn’t.”

Mr Gillies indicated that there may be a submission over Wales’ unfitness for trial based on the report.

A continued intermediate diet was fixed for March 1 to await the report, and Wales was excused attendance.

The 40-year-old did not appear at court on Tuesday in connection, her attendance at the diet having previously been excused.

The charge alleges that on July 3 this year in Grange Road, Wales behaved in a threatening or abusive manner which was likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear and alarm in that she shouted, swore, acted in an aggressive and abusive manner, repeatedly struck and kicked a door there, uttered threats of violence and uttered threats to kill Tracy Joan Christie, whose address is given in court papers as care of The Police Service of Scotland, Dundee.
