The peace of an Angus street was shattered on Saturday when a 20-tonne potato harvester smashed into a block of flats.
Residents heard an almighty crash as the three-wheel-drive red dewulf RA3060 left the road before striking a lamppost and colliding with the building in Forfar’s Don Street.
The harvester ripped along the wall and tore off cladding which ended up on the street below just next to a bus stop.
The collision left a deep hole in the side of the block which penetrated through the wall of an upstairs flat belonging to a young Eastern European couple.
The front windscreen of the agricultural vehicle was smashed and there was damage to its front and roof but luckily the driver was unhurt.
A large crowd gathered as police and a fire appliance from Forfar attended the scene with a structural engineer from Angus Council.
The road was cordoned off to traffic while the scene was made safe including a harness being attached from the chimney around the stricken lammpost to stop it collapsing.
We’ll have a full report on the accident including an interview with the couple whose flat was damaged in Monday’s Courier.
