116mph driver ‘put the foot down’ when he reached A90

A man who drove at 116mph on the A90 in Angus has been banned from the road for a year.

Offshore sales director Philip Gill was caught driving his white Audi RS4 over half a mile near Gateside last year.

Gill appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court and admitted breaking the 70mph speed limit on September 8.

The court heard the 59-year-old “put the foot down” on the way to Aberdeen in response to a family crisis.

His defence agent said his client will be made redundant over the offence.

Depute fiscal Jim Eodonable said: “At 3.10pm officers operated Vascar speed detection equipment they had set up in their car, with the perception the accused was going too fast.”

Gill’s solicitor said: “Almost from the outset he did accept his speed was unacceptable and I tender a copy letter to the fiscal pleading guilty…

“He had been down at Rosyth Dockyard in Fife and had reached Dundee uneventfully but received a frantic phone call from his wife saying his mother had changed her mind at being admitted to a nursing home and that he needed to come home.

“He reached a straight in the road and put the foot down.”

The court heard Gill, of Cairnlee Avenue East, Cults, was disqualified through totting up points in 2005 and had three live points.

“In effect he will be unemployed in very short course,” his solicitor added. “He will take a portfolio of clients with him but … your lordship will be aware of the economic climate pertaining to Aberdeen.”

Fining Gill £600, Sheriff Gregor Murray said: “The A90 is notorious for its dangers.

“Travelling at 116mph is bad enough, but you also have previous convictions and a previous disqualification.

“Although reasons given explain why you did what you did, it’s no excuse.”
