Some tenants of the Derby Street multis will have to stay on in the condemned blocks this winter but will receive an extra £50 per month for their heating bills from Dundee City Council.
The city’s two tallest buildings are to be demolished and some tenants have already moved out. However, some will have to stay there for another season.
Because of the additional cost of heating homes where the neighbouring flats are empty, it is intended to extend a scheme introduced by the city council last year which would give tenants the equivalent of £50 a month between November and March.
The latest figures available indicate there are around 50 families remaining in Butterburn and Bucklemaker Courts at Derby Street, which are scheduled to be demolished.
Depute housing convener Craig Melville said rehousing of tenants is proceeding but it is likely some tenants will still be living in the two blocks into the winter months due to their particular housing needs.
“It obviously costs more to heat homes if the surrounding flats are vacant and we think it is only fair that tenants should get some help with those costs,” he said.
When the scheme was put in place last year it was only intended to run for the one winter.
