A Dundee woman has told of cutting into her supermarket chicken to be confronted by the sickening sight of maggots inside the rancid bird.
Paula Kinnie (25), of Finlow Place, bought the chicken from Asda Milton of Craigie last week.
The supermarket giant is now carrying out a full investigation into how the chicken ended up on its shelves.
After cooking the bird for her dinner, Paula said she carved it open only for it “to collapse like a chocolate Easter egg.”
But it was only on closer investigation that she noticed that the bird had been infested with maggots.
Her father Thomas Kinnie said, “She had cooked the chicken for a couple of hours but when she cut into it she found there were maggots in the bottom.
“She contacted the shop and they gave her a £15 voucher and said they would phone her back but they never did.”‘Fell in on itself’He added, “She eventually got an email back from them saying she could go to environmental health and then to let them know the result.”
Mr Kinnie said it was apparent something was wrong with the chicken as soon as it came out of the oven.
He said, “She knew something was wrong right away and when she cut into it the whole thing just collapsed.
“Normally chicken is quite firm but this just fell in on itself.”
A spokeswoman for Asda said they are investigating the incident and will contact the supplier to ensure the problem is not repeated.
She said, “We take complaints about our food seriously and can reassure the customer that we are investigating this issue with our supplier to find out what went wrong.”
Dead animals and rotting food are perfect breeding grounds for maggots. Maggots are fly larvae they can hatch and grow within eight to 20 hours of being laid.
