Their fight to have a pedestrian crossing installed looks set for success but residents near Pitkerro Road in Dundee are refusing to wait for it to be installed in their bid to get drivers to slow down.
Residents of Baxter Park Terrace have put up signs encouraging drivers to slow down after claiming many were going too fast on the busy route.
For months members of the community have been lobbying for a designated pedestrian crossing to be placed on the road that runs past Morgan Academy and which is used by many as a rat run between the city centre and Kingsway East.
Although it looks likely to succeed, campaigners over the weekend decided to make their wishes perfectly clear, installing signs urging motorists to watch their speed.
Installing the signs after informing police and the council, campaigners believe they are already having a marked effect on the behaviour of drivers.
Resident Lisa Campbell said, “The difference they have made has been unbelievable. About a minute and a half after we put them up I noticed more cars with brake lights on.
“But most drivers don’t mean to break the speed limit as the layout of the road means they don’t know how fast they’re going.”
A campaign to have a recognised pedestrian crossing has been ongoing for months, with Dundee City Council admitting it would not oppose such an installation.
Subject to suitable funding, it is thought traffic lights could be in place on Pitkerro Road early in this coming financial year.
Mrs Campbell added, “When we get a crossing we hope to take the signs down but they’re there to make a point particularly during the school holidays.”
