Pubs hope for royal revenue

Plans that could see pubs and clubs in Dundee remain open for longer on the day of the royal wedding have been welcomed by a leading figure in the industry.

Jonathan Stewart, proprietor of the Royal Arch Bar in Broughty Ferry and the Speedwell Bar on Dundee’s Perth Road, believes that extended opening hours could provide a shot in the arm to an industry which has felt the full force of the economic downturn.

Members of Dundee City Council’s Licensing Board will this week discuss proposals that could see pubs and clubs allowed to remain open for an extra hour, to celebrate the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29.

If approved then it is thought some premises, already expected to be busier than usual due to the bank holiday, could see a significant increase in revenues.

Mr Stewart said, “We’ll be applying for extended hours if we’re allowed to, but it’s up to the local authority, really.

“I think some premises can use extended hours better than others.

“Some can remain open longer and not get any busier. Larger places can possibly use them to compete with nightclubs but smaller places I don’t think will notice as much.”

He added, “I know that our cook is already developing a Kate and Wills pie although I’m not sure what goes into that.”

A decision on the matter will be taken by board members on Thursday.
