Stagecoach has refused to be drawn on claims it is planning to close its Dundee depot and transfer operations to Arbroath.

A source told The Courier the company is intending to close its Stagecoach Strathtay depot at Smeaton Road in Wester Gourdie Industrial Estate in order to centralise its Tayside operations in Arbroath.

Stagecoach announced earlier this month it is withdrawing its number 26 bus service which runs from the city centre to Camperdown Park at the end of May because it did not attract enough passengers.

However, the source said the service was popular enough to survive and had also been used by staff who used it to travel from the Seagate Bus Station to the depot.

But they claimed the service was scrapped because the depot is being shut down.

According to the source, services will be transferred to the company’s depot at Elliot Industrial Estate in Arbroath.

“They want everything run from Arbroath depot, which is pointless because it will cost them twice as much,” said the source.

“This also means several jobs are in danger and also services will be cut. It could affect people from outside Dundee and in Dundee.

“If they shut Dundee then people will lose vital services.

“They will not tell the staff because they are worried about a mass walkout,” said the source.

A spokeswoman for Stagecoach said the company would not comment on speculation but added that the company is not planning any more changes to its services in Dundee.

“Like all companies, we continually monitor our operations at this time, we have no plans to make further changes to any of our routes or timetables in the Dundee area. Our focus continues to be on providing our customers with high quality and excellent value local bus services,” the spokeswoman added.
