Almost 20,000 people in Dundee qualify for a reduction in their council tax, government figures have revealed.
The average sum taken off people’s bills is £12.51 per week, which puts the weekly cost to the public purse at almost £250,000.
Statistics show there are 543,000 Council Tax Reduction (CTR) recipients in Scotland, including 19,980 in Dundee. Pensioners and single parents make up more than half the total.
In Dundee, people living in Band A properties make up 12,000 of the CTR cases with Band B accounting for another 4,600 and 2,000 in Band C.
The reduction applies to 30% of city households, well above the national average of 22.5%. Only Glasgow and West Dunbartonshire have higher proportions of their households receiving CTR.
