Dundee United players will wear black armbands at their next match as a mark of respect for a fan who collapsed and died while queuing to buy tickets at Tannadice.

Stephen Biggans was one of dozens of Arabs waiting to buy cup derby tickets when he collapsed on Wednesday.

An ambulance rushed to the scene at 9.10am but, despite the efforts of paramedics and fans, it has been confirmed Mr Biggans passed away.

Both Dundee United players and their opponents, Hamilton Academical, will wear black armbands at their Scottish Premiership tie on Saturday as a mark of respect for Mr Biggans.

A spokesman for the club said: “All at Dundee United were shocked to learn of the death of Stephen Biggans who tragically collapsed outside the club shop at Tannadice on Wednesday.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends and, as a mark of respect, both teams will wear black armbands at the match this Saturday.”

Fellow Arabs took to fan forums and social media expressing their sorrow at the sudden death.

One fan wrote: “Tragic news for all involved, condolences to family RIP.”

Another said: “Terrible news. RIP to a good Arab.”
