New map offers a path into Dundee’s literary history

A literary map of Dundee has been produced by Dundee Central Library staff, who will be walking it on Sunday for charity.

The 15-mile, 48-stop route takes in Broughty Ferry as well as the city centre and the west and east ends and will chronicle Dundee’s literary past and present.

Stops on the trail will have walkers thinking about Frankenstein author Mary Shelly, crime writer Agatha Christie and children’s favourite Jacqueline Wilson.

There’s even a stop dedicated to notoriously bad poet William McGonagall.

Staff from libraries, as well as Literary Dundee, will take part in a charity walk on Sunday along the trail to raise money for food banks in Dundee.

The trail ends with an optional toast at the George Orwell pub in Perth Road.

Tanya Duthie of Dundee Central Library, who organised the walk, said: “It started as a charity walk, but after we did research we just kept adding to it.

“We have learned so much putting it together, and we thought we knew a lot about Dundee and books!”

A spokesperson for Literary Dundee said: “We’re really excited it’s happening. We hope it will get people involved with Dundee’s literary past.”
